Shops and Labs

The equipment used for PIA students’ practical training exceeds a value of $20,000,000. The shops and labs that have been designed for the Aviation and Technology Programs include equipment and facilities such as:

  • Reciprocating and turbine engines
  • Airplanes, jets, and helicopters
  • Electrical equipment
  • Electronic equipment, including oscilloscopes
  • Industry-grade instruments and controls
  • Trainers designed for troubleshooting
  • Communication and navigation equipment
  • Avionics components
  • Radio transmitters and receivers
  • Welding equipment
  • Composite fabrication and repair shop
  • Sheet metal repair and fabrication shop
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic shop
  • Computer lab
  • Hangar and shop computer stations

The school also maintains tool rooms that contain the precision and specialty tools needed to perform work on airworthy aircraft, powerplants, and electro-mechanical equipment.

PIA encourages prospective students to tour the school’s classrooms and laboratories, as we strive to offer a superior hands-on learning experience.





    PIA took me from my high school days of just "getting by" and passing the time until school was over, to preparing for an industry where school never ends. I recieved my A&P license in 1981, and went to work for Allegheny Commuter in Youngstown, OH, then Parkersburg, WV. Five years later I moved to Minneapolis, MN, to work for Northwest in the wheels and brakes shop. After finding out the real meaning of winter, I returned to the 'Burgh and USAir as it was called. I spent 18 years...
