Customized Training for Aviation and Technology (School of Specialized Technology)

Over the years, PIA has partnered with a variety of businesses, communities, and educational institutions to create customized training programs. Several of these courses can be tailored to fit an organization’s specific needs for content, location and scheduling.

Elective courses and customized training for the following are available through PIA’s School of Specialized Technology.

Composite Materials

This course is designed to introduce technicians to working with modern composite materials. No previous experience is required, and the course consists of both lecture and hands-on training. Some of the topics covered in the course include:

  • History of Composites
  • Materials and Manufacturing Processes: Adhesives, Fibers, Resins, Fillers
  • Applications
  • Terminology
  • Safety
  • Lay-up Procedures
  • Inspection
  • Damage Assessment of Materials
  • Repairs
  • Nondestructive Testing
  • Federal Aviation Regulations as they apply to Composites

Since this program is offered on a quarterly basis, companies benefit from sending their employees for training at whatever time of year is most convenient.

Sheet Metal Fabrication

This continuing education offering is derived from two PIA courses that specialize in working with metallic structures. This hands-on course of study introduces the learner to the art of forming metal and expands upon the practical aspects of sheet metal construction and repair. Topics addressed include:

  • Riveting Practices
  • Special Fasteners
  • Bonded Structures
  • Structural Repairs
  • Sheet Metal Fabrication
  • Metal Fatigue and Corrosion

Since this program is offered on a quarterly basis, companies benefit from sending their employees for training at whatever time of year is most convenient.

Rotorcraft Systems & Maintenance

This elective course was originally designed to familiarize FAA field inspectors with the intricacies of rotary wing aircraft (helicopters), and it has become a popular elective course for PIA’s full-time students. The course provides an interesting look into the history of helicopters, the peculiar aerodynamics of rotorcraft, and helicopter flight controls and basic engine installations.

PIA took me from my high school days of just "getting by" and passing the time until school was over, to preparing for an industry where school never ends. I recieved my A&P license in 1981, and went to work for Allegheny Commuter in Youngstown, OH, then Parkersburg, WV. Five years later I moved to Minneapolis, MN, to work for Northwest in the wheels and brakes shop. After finding out the real meaning of winter, I returned to the 'Burgh and USAir as it was called. I spent 18 years...

"PIA showed me the way! I started working for US Airways in Harrisburg, PA three days after my graduation. Currently, I'm working on helicopters for the Maryland State Police. There's nothing else I'd rather be doing. This is a great field and PIA was THE school to go to!"
