Commercial Aviation

Commercial aviation encompasses several categories, including commuter, regional, national, and major airlines. These categories depend on the revenue an airline generates. Companies like Delta, United, and American are some of the most recognizable airlines in the country. Mechanics interested in working for commercial airlines often begin their careers at smaller regional airlines, which are often affiliated with major airlines. A common position for a mechanic in this sector is Line Technician.

In 2024, the U.S. averaged more than 44,000 commercial flights per day, according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Air Traffic Organization. In 2024, the most popular aircraft used in commercial flight was the Boeing 7372, completing 10 million flights.

MRO  (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul)

An “MRO” in aviation refers to a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul facility, which specializes in maintaining, repairing, and overhauling aircraft. MRO’s obtain approvals that specify the type of work they are able to do, including determining the size of aircraft they can work on, the components they are authorized to maintain, and even specialized services they can offer, like non-destructive testing.

An MRO specializing in base maintenance may be responsible for providing airlines and pilots with large-scale maintenance tasks, such as heavy checks. These checks can take a few weeks to a few months to complete..

Aircraft Manufacturing

Another career path for technicians is building and assembling aircraft before they ever take their first flight.

Companies like Boeing, Bombardier, Embraer, and Gulfstream seek out aviation technicians to manufacture the aircraft, as well as the parts needed to maintain those aircraft once in use. Planes go through rigorous testing before they can fly – including simulating years’ worth of wear in a few short weeks. In addition, companies like Pratt & Whitney and GE Aviation build the engines that are attached to these planes, going through equally as rigorous tests to ensure optimal performance.

General Aviation refers to all aircraft operated outside of scheduled commercial airline service and accounts for more than 90% of US-registered aircraft. This includes privately owned aircraft, flight schools, charter operations and more. Aviation technicians who work in these areas would maintain the aircraft tailored to the specific needs of their employer, often gaining hands-on experience across multiple aircraft types.

Much of the maintenance on General Aviation aircraft are performed at specialized repair stations and fixed-base operators (FBOs). These organizations provide support to companies, pilots and aircraft owners that may not employ mechanics full time or require ground support on their travel.

Military subcontractors are often brought in by defense agencies to help fill gaps in military capabilities. These private companies or individuals may be hired directly by a defense agency or through a primary defense contractor to provide operational support.

Civilian technicians in this sector may work on military-grade equipment – which could include unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). These high-tech aircraft are being embraced by organizations worldwide to facilitate package delivery, monitor traffic, and have been used to support traditional fixed-wing aircraft inspections. Skills in the structural repair, avionics support, and various hydraulic components lend themselves well to this area.

In the fast-paced corporate world of today, companies desire the ability to quickly and efficiently transport employees, customers, and goods to and from their various locations. These companies can range from Fortune 500 Companies to small non-profit organizations. All these organizations benefit from the use of corporate or business aviation in an effort to achieve their goals.

The industry of corporate aviation encompasses a wide variety of aircraft, from fixed-wing, single pilot planes to turbine aircraft capable of international flight. This sector of aviation employs more than 1.2 million individuals.

The air-cargo sector plays a crucial role in global trade. Airlines carry roughly USD 8.3 trillion worth of goods annually, which breaks down to about USD 22.7 billion per day.

In terms of volume, around 62 million tons of cargo are transported each year — accounting for more than one-third of global trade by value, despite being less than 1% of trade by weight.

With dozens of organizations, in the U.S. alone, specializing in air-cargo operations, having skilled aviation-technicians to maintain aircraft, cargo-equipment, and support infrastructure is essential to keeping global trade and supply chains flowing.

One well-known example of specialized cargo aircraft is the Boeing 747‑400LCF Dreamlifter: a heavily modified version of the Boeing 747 used primarily to transport major aircraft components between supplier sites and assembly plants.

Rotorcraft, including helicopters, are versatile aircraft requiring specialized knowledge and maintenance. Utilized for emergency services, military operations, tourism, and utility work, rotorcraft maintenance is essential to the safe transport of civilians, patients, military and emergency personnel who travel on board.
