Wings over Myrtle Beach gets help from PIA Students

Students from PIA Myrtle Beach volunteered their time to assist organizers of the Wings Over Myrtle Beach Air Show, held April 28th and 29th of this year.  This marks the first air show presented in Myrtle Beach in over 20 years.

The air show featured the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, U.S. Air Force F-16 Demo Team, Geico Skytypers Air Show, the Class of 45 Demo Team, and USSOCOM Para-Commandos Jump Team.

Roughly thirty students volunteered their time to the air show.  Some teamed up with Horry County and TSA as perimeter security.  Others served concessions to the over 120,000 attendees at the event, helped to set up booths, or offered a hand wherever needed.  PIA instructors lent their support by driving the smoke oil truck, replenishing oil in the smaller planes to make the contrails.  Instructor Greg Davis served as commentator for the event, utilizing his aviation knowledge to keep attendees informed and engaged.  PIA served as one of the sponsors for the event.

Volunteering for the event allowed students not only to participate in the hugely successful air show, but was a unique opportunity to engage with the community.  Thanks to the USAF F-16 Viper Demo Team, students had the opportunity to speak with team members and see the aircraft up close.

In addition, PIA would like to thank Bill Braack, with the Smoke-n-Thunder Jet Car for all the mentions of PIA, as well as allowing students to ride along in the pick-up truck to tow the car back after runs.  The engine of the Jet Car, a Westinghouse J34-48, was previously owned by PIA.

PIA would also like to thank the Blue Angels for the signed lithograph print, in recognition for the help provided by students and staff.  We would also like to extend our thanks to Tina and John of JLC AirShow Management, for presenting the show and allowing PIA to have a hands-on role in the event.

Congratulations to all who participated in making the Wings Over Myrtle Air Show a successful event!
